Thermocouple wires and rods

The original method (and sometimes the more cost-effective method) to measure temperature is by using bare thermocouple wires. Kamet Trading offers a wide range of the most commonly used thermocouple alloys, with diameters 0.1 up to 3.26 mm or more. Not only types E, J, K, N and T, but also type C and D and noble metals like type S, R and B. We have many alloys available from stock to ensure fast delivery times and low minimum order quantities. Type K

Type K is the most commonly used thermocouple, it has a good resistance against oxidation and is recommended for oxidizing and inert atmospheres. However, it should not be used in sulphurous atmospheres, reducing atmospheres or in a long time in a vacuum as this will have a significant impact on the EMF values. The type K wire is delivered stabilized which means the wire will already be in the "K-state" and the thermocouple will remain more stable. Pre-oxidized surfaces can be delivered in order to increase resistance to corrosion.

Type N 

Type N is a popular choice for the higher temperatures. It has been developed with silicium so they will have a long lifetime due to the improved oxidation resistance of the NN leg. Also it can handle a longer exposure to high temperatures without a gradual drift of the EMF values than a type K.

Type J

To be used in oxidizing environments up to 760 °C. We recommend the use of larger wire diameters for higher temperatures.

Type T 

The temperature limits depend on the furnace atmosphere and other factors. The values stated are to be regarded as approximate values.
Type T is used in laboratory and in industries for  temperature range – 185°C to + 370°C when high temperature accuracy is required. In case of usage at  < 0°C, cryogenic quality is required.

Type E

Type E has the highest E.M.F. output of all the referenced thermocouples. It allows usage in applications requiring high E.M.F. output and superior resistance to oxidation in the operating range from 150°C to 870°C.  It is sometimes used in thermal-generators (thermopiles). Arranged in series, a thermopile allows measuring accurately very small temperature differences.

Type C & D

Type C & D thermocouples are suited for measurements in the 0 °C to 2320 °C range. These thermocouples are well-suited for vacuum furnaces at extremely high temperatures. They must never be used in the presence of oxygen at temperatures above 260°C

Type C: Tungsten 5% Rhenium versus Tungsten 26% Rhenium wire
Type D*: Tungsten 3% Rhenium versus Tungsten 25% Rhenium wire
Type G*: Pure Tungsten versus Tungsten 26% Rhenium wire

* "Type D" and "Type G" are industry terms and not official letter designated thermocouples.  


Tungsten-Rhenium Accuracy Guarantee

The thermoelectric tolerance shall be the larger of ±4.4°C or ±1% of the temperature at each calibration point.EMF tolerances refer to the deviations from the °C nominal temperature-emf relationships defined by ASTM E230 and E1751. The accuracy guarantee represents the initial calibration tolerance of the bare wire only. Factors that may affect accuracy in use include purity or quality of the atmosphere or vacuum, wire size, temperature gradient, thermocouple geometry and insulation type and purity.  

Thermocouple Rods

We can supply type K thermocouple rods, from Ø6 to Ø10 mm from stock. Our standard length is 2200 mm (guaranteed class 1).
We can also supply other rods such as type N and rods in longer lengths. All of the rods are made my our suplier Isabellenhütte and supplied with full certification.
