The WCOT cables are made by Okazaki Manufacturing Company in Japan. We have different one conductor standards with sheath materials AISI321, Alloy 825 and Inconel 600.

The WCA heater cables are made by ARI industries in the United States. The WCA heater cables have a smaller diameter compared to the wide range of different diameters of the WCOT. Furthermore, some WCA heater cables have an option for two conductors.

Properties of mineral insulated heating cable

Our MI heating cable has proven to be an excellent choice in pipe installations in chemical and petrochemical plants. This can be off-shore, or in facilities where radiant heat is produced, requiring  temperatures above +80°C at high specific electrical load and heat output. Requirements rise up to temperature values of +1000°C and loadings up to 300 W/m. Heating cables equipped with insulations of plastic components reach their limit at a temperature of maximum +260°C. But a strict and continuous reduction of specific load follows the increase of operating temperature level. In consequence, heating cable constructions with plastic insulation become more and more uneconomic at medium temperatures >+100°C and for use inside potentially explosive atmospheres.

Mineral insulated heating cable shows itself as the technical and economical alternative!

Our mineral insulated heating cables are designed for applications like frost protection, temperature maintenance and temperature increase. Typical features are high pressure resistance, water and gas tightness and constant heat transfer to medium.

Production process of mineral insulated heating cable

The production of our mineral insulated heating cable is very similar to the production of our MI thermocouple cable.

a) Uniform pipe with increased diameter/ wall thickness (multiple diameter size compared to finished cable product)
b) Oversized heating conductor (rod) centered inside pipe
c) Magnesium oxide powder, purity level: minimum 96%*. 

Start by terminating of both pipe ends and proceeding reduction of pipe diameter until reach of final cable diameter. Magnesium oxide solidifies during manufacturing process and becomes hard.
The manufacturing experience of those products ensures always an identical product standard due to consistent choice and dimensions.
The construction of mineral insulated heated cable assures a long-term loading up to 300 W/m at operating voltage up to 1000 V and heating element length up to several hundred meters.

Mineral insulated heating cable: Typical applications 

The unique construction of mineral insulated heating cables ensures a high level of form stability.
Different alloy materials for the outer cable sheath facilitate the appropriate choice of heating cable type according to type of use. Especially on long pipe lengths and large diameters, mineral insulated heating cables show their capability. They can be spiraled around or fixed parallel to pipe run. The stability of shape simplifies the installation of mineral insulated heating cable on site.

Scope of application 

Pipeline installations in industrial plants with electrical heat tracing. Loading up to 300 Watt per meter and, due to the construction, constant heat emission independent from ambient temperature.
A wide range of heating conductor resistances (0.16 to 10 Ohm per meter) allows a precise adjustment of the produced heat according to the application. Pipeline lengths of several hundred meters and large surfaces can be easily heated by implementing mineral insulated heating cable. Complex surfaces requiring tight bending or uneven surface profiles are predestined to be covered with mineral insulated heating cables, keeping themselves in shape after profiling.
Installation of cable in direct contact with surface or pre-assembled on mesh wire mats, designed to fit exactly to surface outline. In case of damage mats can be easily replaced.

Valves, flanges and fittings require optimized heat transfer which is only achievable by entire contact between mineral insulated heating cable and surface to be heated.

Mineral insulated heating cables can be easily bent in shape. After bending they stay dimensionally stable. For fixing heating cable to surface, high temperature resistant adhesive tapes or fiber ribbons without adhesive backside are best choice. Again an alternative: Pre-assembly of heating cable on meshwire mats or the use of pre-punched fixing straps.

Monitors and solar cells require for surface refinement a consistent process heat with minimized deviations. This heat is produced by special vacuum heating units. Temperatures exceeding +200°C make mineral insulated heating cable an excellent choice due to easy bending and high level of form stability.

University of Cologne

After developing the Mineral Insulated Heater Cable together with Okazaki, we asked the University of Cologne and several independent test institutes in Germany to test our heater cable. Electrical, mechanical and thermodynamic features of the cable were tested and all of our cables passed the tests. 

Mineral insulated heating cables have an electrical insulation between heating conductor and outer jacket of magnesium oxide.
For the inspection of dielectric strength and of insulation property, the test equipment and benchmarks were adapted to international standards such as IEC 60079-30-1/2.

Finally all 52 test probes passed the test at 2500 V AC.

The evaluation of insulation resistance confirmed extremely high values, far above the required targets in international standard.
The continuity of all cable dimensions and the electro-physical characteristics are the result of practiced long-term product improvement and production refinement.
Extremely important aspects for electrical heating systems, planned and operating inside potentially explosive surroundings.

Reliable data about the electrical performance and temperature spread on outer heating cable jacket are essential for reliable and safe process planning.
The evaluation of those data followed requested test-setups, following the demands of international standards.
The results show in this case the relation between electrical power (power output) and heating cable jacket temperature.
The interaction of those two values should always be taken into consideration for achievement of optimized process heat and minimized installation maintenance.
Different operating conditions had been empirically created by supplying the heating unit of mineral insulated heating cable with different supply voltages up to temperature limits of different cable types.
From specific values taken like operating current, voltage, power output and cable surface temperature, measured at five points along the heating cable run, diagrams express the relation between power output and cable surface temperature.
